Good evening Parents, just some info regarding upcoming quizzes as we have come to the end of a Math unit and a chapter in Science.

This Monday, February 2nd, the children will begin working on the end of unit quiz for multiplication and division. If they require more time, they will continue on Tuesday. We have been reviewing in class and they’ve just completed the end of unit problem.  You can help your child by continuing to regularly practice multiplication and division facts. Use the multiplication table found in your child’s agenda. As the concepts in this unit are understanding multiplication and division facts, they will not be able to use the multiplication table for this test. You can help them with recalling strategies they learned in class. Ex. If they don’t know 6×7, they may know 6×6 or 5×7. So, a strategy is to add on one more group of 6 or one more group of 7.

Once the quiz is done, the new concepts in math have to do with measurement. The children will be learning to measure figures using centimetres, square centimetres, metres, and square metres. Once again, multiplication (for finding area) is needed.

Next Friday, February 6, we will have a quiz on the first 3 lessons of Light in Chapter 4. The children seem to have a strong understanding of the concepts covered: What is light? What are some sources of light? What’s the difference between natural and artificial light sources? As in the past, we are certain the children will do well. They will continue to do review activities and you may wish to ask them to tell you about what they’ve leaned. As in the past, check out the Nelson Probe site for Gr. 4 and do the practice quiz with them.

The upcoming science concepts in Chapter 5 are the properties of light: ex. light travels in a straight line, some materials are transparent, translucent, or opaque, light can be reflected, refracted (bent), and absorbed.

Thanks very much for your support.

Regards,

Marie and Darlene
