Dear Parents, this is to inform you of the upcoming Science quiz on Ch. 7: Properties of Sound. The quiz will be on Wednesday, May 6th.

The children have brought home the photocopied text pages which they should use to review. We will remind them to take home their duo tangs to also help them review the chapter. We have done several review activities these last few days including the online Nelson Probe quiz for the chapter. Please feel free to revisit the site if you wish.

The basic concepts are the following:

  • sound is caused by sound vibrations
  • sound carries energy
  • loud sounds carry more energy (the greater the energy or vibrations, the greater the sound or volume)
  • the shaking of sounds is called vibrations
  • vibrations are measured in the number of vibrations per second (frequency)
  • higher (faster) frequency corresponds to higher pitch sounds
  • lower (slower) frequency corresponds to lower pitch sounds
  • sound can be audible or inaudible, depending on the pitch (humans can’t hear all sounds as the sound may be either too low or high in pitch)
  • sound can travel through many substances or materials (solids, liquids, gases)
  • materials may transmit, reflect, or absorb sound
  • sound travels fastest through solids and slowest through gases.
  • hard, smooth surfaces reflect sound best
  • soft surfaces absorb sound best
  • sometimes reflected sound can be an echo

You may wish to ask your child to point out different materials in your home which help absorb sound (pillows, blankets, couches, curtains, rugs and carpets, armchairs) and why we want sounds absorbed.

We are very confident that your child will once again do well on this end of unit quiz.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Regards,

Marie and Darlene
