Dear Grade Six Parents,

Starting this week, Grade Six will have two weeks rather than one week to complete each Wordly Wise unit. This will give students more time to interact with the vocabulary in each unit and commit their meanings to long term memory. In addition, I am hoping that more exposure to the words will result in a greater ability to use words correctly in their writing and speech.

As a result of this change, our quiz on Friday, November 1st will be on the Unit 7 Spelling only. Section E of Unit 7 will be due next week. The following quiz on November 7th will be on Unit 7 Vocabulary meanings. Please note, for two weeks the students will be using the same words.

In future, our tests will be as follows:

Spelling Test: (week one)
The spelling test will be a dictation of the words, as usual. To prepare for this, I will ask students to write each word five times and then do a practice test at home for homework.

Vocabulary Test: (week two)
The following week, for the vocabulary test, students will have a list of the words in front of them. The first section of test will be a dictation of the words’ meanings. The students will have to write the correct list word for each definition.

For example, If I read out the definition “A rough, noisy fight” students would be required to write “brawl” (from Unit 7)

The second portion of the test will be just like the usual vocabulary portion of our previous tests. It will include two definitions and two sentences, written by students. The words selected by will be from the list,

While the Wordly Wise program is challenge for students, I am convinced it is an extremely valuable tool for enriching vocabulary. If our students absorb the meanings more fully as a result of this change, we may have some very articulate children on our hands!

Thank you for your support with this change. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Ms. Andrea Phillips
