Dear Parents, this is a short blog to remind you of  2 upcoming due dates. The Family Time Capsule is due Tuesday, Oct. 7th. Please help your child find 5 items which are important to you and represent you as a family. Please help your child fill in the back of the info sheet, listing the reasons why you chose these items. Place these items in a small container such as a shoe box, chocolate tin, etc. These will all be returned to you as soon as your child has had his/her turn presenting the “time capsule”.

Secondly, your child should have shown you the Social Studies assignment I sent home on Monday about spotting stereotypes on TV. It is due on Monday, Oct. 6th. If you’ve not seen it yet, please ask your child to show you the sheet found in the red S.S. duo tang. Some of the stereotypes we discussed in class are the following:

Mean or evil stepmothers/stepsisters, evil witches, people who wear glasses are always smart, all Italian people  love pasta.

As you watch TV with your child, try to spot more stereoptypes. Here are some very simple ones to spot, especially in commercials: blonds are shown as dumb, women are the only ones doing house work or who care about their appearance (shampoo and toothpaste ads), husbands are sometimes shown as being dumb compared to their wives, bossy older sisters, bratty younger brother, boys have messy rooms whereas girls are very clean and tidy, etc. If you have any questions about these 2 assignments, please contact me.

Good luck,

Marie
